stats (repost)

here are some statistics on the GLBT community on a nationwide level. (as of 2005)

-97% of public high school students reported that they regularly heard homophobic remarks from their peers

-80% of the GLBT youth report severe social isolation

-53% of students report hearing homophobic comments made by school staff

-80% of prospective teachers report negative attitudes toward gay and lesbian people

-1/3 of prospective teachers can be classified as ‘high grade homophobes’

-52% of prospective teachers report that they would feel uncomfortable working with an openly lesbian or gay colleague

-77% of prospective teachers would not encourage a class discussion on homosexuality; and 85% oppose integrating GLBT themes into their existing curricula

-2/3 of guidance counselors harbor negative feelings toward gay and lesbian people

-less than 20% of guidance counselors have received any training whatsoever on serving gay and lesbian students

-only 25% of guidance counselors consider themselves ‘highly competent’ in serving gay and lesbian youth

-teachers fail to intervene in 97% of incidents involving anti-gay slurs at school

-78% of school administrators say they know of no GLBT students in their schools, yet 84% of them claim they feel that their schools are safe places for these young people

-28% of American households consist of married parents with biological children; 7% consisted of married parents with children where a father works outside the home, and the mother at home, making it so that a remarkable 65% of American households have either deceased, divorced, or separated parents.

-19% of gay men and 25% of lesbians report suffering physical violence at the hands of a family member as a result of their sexual orientation

-45% of gay males and 20% of lesbians report having experienced either verbal, physical, or both types of harassment during high school because of their sexual orientation

-42% of adolescent lesbians and 34% of adolescent gay males who have suffered physical attack have also attempted suicide

-68% of adolescent gay males use alcohol (26% of which drink more than once a week), while 44% use other drugs

-83% of adolescent lesbians use alcohol, and 56% use other drugs

-30% of all completed teen suicides were carried out by gays and lesbians, extrapolation shows this means that every 5 hours and 48 minutes, a gay teen successfully commits suicide

end of the month

30 06 2008

alright, today’s the last day for this month’s NaBloPoMo, and i’m happy that this month is finally over. because now i don’t have to worry if i missed a day (and i know i missed a few this month, but whatever).  hopefully i’ll have more to write about, instead of just putting up small, pointless posts.

plus, CSB starts up next month so hopefully that’ll give me more to write about.

screens are up

29 06 2008

my dad and i were finally able to get some new screens up, since a few of them on the back porch were ripped (one was half-way to falling completely off). luckily, it didn’t take too much time, though today’s been not only hot (mid-80’s), but humid as well (upper 90s-100%). the good thing, tho, is that they’re done. and now the bugs won’t eat us while we’re eating outside.

my sister’s ex came over earlier to drop some of her things off, but i’m not exactly sure as to how that went, since i was leaving on a ride just as he pulled in. by the time i got back, he was gone, so i’m guessing it was just one of those ‘heres your stuff, see ya later’ kind of moments. oh well, i guess i shouldn’t really be posting about my sister’s relationships online.

i got into a bit of an argument yesterday with my sister as we were driving to (or, rather, as i was giving her a ride to) my parents’ office, because i accidentally jumped the curb as i was turning onto the street that their office is on, and then bumped into the concrete wall in the parking lot since i didn’t have an accurate view of how close i was since i was trying to park while also reacting to what she was saying. of course, this is also the same person who needs a ride everywhere since her car broke down. because there really isn’t anyone as easy to pin all of your problems on than your only sibling, right?

boy am i happy that i took the prozac this morning, cos it definately helped.

oh, the irony

27 06 2008

my dad and i went over the motorcycle shop near us yesterday to trade his bike in for a new one (one that has a better seat and is a twin cylinder), and on the way, i asked him if the girl that hit that pedestrian a few years ago will ever have her insurance go down. we talked about it for a few minutes, then moved on. out of irony (or maybe just coincidence), the girl walked into the bike store right as we were, and after she was out of earshot, i pointed her out to my dad, just as one of their sales people was walking over to her in the sportbike section. totally didn’t expect that to happen.

whew

26 06 2008

yesterday was hectic. not only did my sister want to clean, but we found out that an old friend of ours (who I hadn’t seen since trevor’s funeral) was in the area and was stopping by with her sister and their 4(!) kids. oh my god, did we have to clean. we had to vacuum the den, kitchen, and main hallway at least twice, since clearly it isn’t a good enough job to just do it once. i also took the time to clean all the remains from our cat’s hunting sessions off the porch so that their kids wouldn’t see what really happened to alvin and the chimpunks.

it was good seeing them though, and the only two things that went wrong were when my friend’s youngest (who’s 13 months) tripped on himself and hit his head on the fireplace, and when her sister’s son found my pack of cigarettes next to the computer, and then walked over and handed it to me. right in front of my mom. whoops.

5 years later

25 06 2008

today marks 5 years since trevor died.

keeping my shit together today is tougher than normal.

trip down memory lane

22 06 2008

in addition to trying to get all my posts onto wordpress, i’m also trying to get all of my emails from my saint leo address to my yahoo address. i’ve got pretty much everything but what’s in my ‘family’ folder copied, and now that i’m working on it, it takes me back to when i was still trying to figure everything out when i started college. it’s quite fun, especially when you find an email from your mom trying to figure out if everything’s alright while also saying that she’s not ‘trying to hover’.
